Annual Cricket Match, February 6 '05
-
Sanjay Mathur
A friendly Cricket match is now a regular feature of Mathur Sabha's
activities. A cricket match was scheduled on Sunday, the 6th of
February, 2005. This was the 5th cricket match organised by Mathur
Sabha, Jaipur and the venue was, as always, Maharaja’s College Ground.
The match was scheduled from 10.00 A.M. onwards and members of Mathur
Sabha, Jaipur and their wards were present at the ground, Some came to
participate , while the rest came to enjoy the sunny day and the
pleasant atmosphere.
The weather did not disappoint them nor did the players. The weather
was perfect for a cricket match and so was the setting at the ground,
Wickets with bails on either end of a new matting and freshly mowed
lush green grass was just picture perfect. The small flags along the
boundary line added a whole new dimension to the setting. The senior
members of the Sabha enlisted the eager participants and the two teams,
viz., Presidents Eleven (P-11) and Vice Presidents Eleven (VP-11) were
drawn. Since the number of members wishing to participate was more than
the normally permissible number (11 each side), teams of 12 players
each was made.
The captain of the P-11 was yours truly (Sanjay), while for the VP-11
the captain was Rajeev. The President and the Vice President
accompanied the two captains for the toss, which was won by the VP-11’s
team captain, Rajeev, who without hesitation, elected to bat on a
perfect batting
strip.
.
The two openers of the VP-11, Yuvraj and Vibhor walked in to bat with a
warm round of applause around them. The opening bowler from the P-11
was Ankur. Both of them were out cheaply to some splendid bowling by
Ankur. This resulted in a slide and at one time it looked as if it’ll
be a one-sided match. A gutsy display by the captain, Rajeev saw his
team gain strength and reach a respectable score. A sharp and rising
delivery hit Rajeev just over his left eye forcing him to retire. Some
great rear-gaurd action by Vaibhav & Kunal had the P-11’s bowlers
on the mat. Vaibhav top scored for VP-11 while Siddharth of P-11 had
the maximum scalps.
As always, Neerajji was at the mike, providing us with some really
witty remarks along with some acute cricketing observations. The
commentary was excellent and was full of verve and enthusiasm.
The lunch break of the match was taken after the first innings in which
delicious non-vegetarian and vegetarian food (in neatly packed boxes)
was served. The non-vegetarian consisted of Keema, the taste of which
was appreciated by all. Earlier, the players were served chewing gums
while the spectators enjoyed toffees, peanuts, revari and tea, which
further highlighted the bonhomie not only among the players but also
among the other members of the community.
Time was ripe enough for some serious cricket with the P-11 needing a
good opening partnership and the VP-11 needing a few early wickets to
mount pressure on each other. The openers of P-11 Nimit & Rajat
strode in, with their minds focussed on building a good opening
partenership. And they managed it quite successfully. Nimit mauled the
VP-11 bowlers with his swashbuckling style. He square cut, straight
drove and pulled with aplomb and we saw a glimpse of Gundappa Viswnath
in his batting! Just as we thought that it was curtains for VP-11; in
came Arun with a sterling bowling performance, taking three quick
wickets. But Dilip and Aseem saw to it that P-11 sail through without
further hiccups.
The closely fought match was won by P-11 by 2 wickets with an over to
spare. Man of the match was Nimit, best batsman award went to Vaibhav
while the best bowler award went to Siddharth. The event came to an end
with the President of the Sabha giving away the prizes. The General
Secretary gave a vote of thanks to all the participants and also the
spectators who came up in sizeable number to make the event memorable.
Social Activities in 2005

benefit of the residents of Jaipur. Blood donation camps were
also
organized.
Free Medical Camp
Mathur Sabha, Jaipur has three different fields of

Diwali festivals, en-couraging sports manship in youngsters by playing

encouraging students by award of prizes, trophie, shields &
scholarships.

to do
much.

activities and do some social work for the general public, irrespective
of
the caste & creed. The matter was discussed in the 1st
